On this tour journey from Dundee’s origins as an east coast trading port through its industrial heritage of jute manufacture, ship building, and whaling to the present day as a centre of biomedical research and computer game production.
My original The Dundee 2.0 Tour has been rebranded and refreshed in 2026 into the Dundee 4J Tour.

Jam – This colourful mural can been found near the site of Dundee’s marmalade factory. Hear about Marmalade was “invented” in Dundee.
Jute – The raw materials to make jute passed through the Port of Dundee. Some parts of the docks were filled in but this part remains. The HMS Unicorn at over 200 years old is older than the dock where it is moored.
Journalism – DC Thomson publish newspapers, magazines and comics. There are a couple of statues the one of Desperate Dan from The Dandy is the most famous.
Joysticks – In the 1980s millions of ZX Spectrum computer were made in Dundee. Teenagers starting making games and forming companies. One company made Lemmings and Grand Theft Auto. Another ported Minecraft from the PC to the consoles.

How long are the tours?
The walking tour loop is about 1 mile or 1.6 km
However it is very flat with no steps to climb.
The duration of the tours will be between 60 minutes.

What should we wear?
Dress like an onion. In layers, with warm waterproof clothing. Don’t forget comfortable footwear, hats and gloves. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best.
The route is lovely when the sun is out, in horizontal rain, not so much.
